CNC Router Maintenance: Addressing Axis Alarms

Ballscrew Guys were called in to address axis alarms on a Holzher Evolution 4705 CNC router. This is a vertical system, so it saves on shop floor space. It has ball screws, which, because of the vertical positioning, dust sits on top of the ball nut flange and works into the ball nut. Eventually clogging and starving it for lube where it does not want to spin. This is also a manual lube system. No automatic delivery of critical lubricants. We usually hear the same thing from the operator every time we free up a clogged CNC router: “I did not know there was a grease fitting there!” Holz-Her CNC makes panel processing, routers, and machining centers.

The ball screw from a vertical Holzher Evolution 4705 CNC Router. Ballscrew Guys are fixing the servo alarms which stem from a clogged up and under-lubed ball nut assembly. If you look, the vertical ball screw does not really have anything in the way of protective covers. Dust builds up on the screw shaft and gets sucked into the ball nut. This in turn causes the Z-Axis to alarm out or just not respond. Sometimes this issue manifests in a servo overheating alarm. Regardless, it is a lack of lube and contamination issue. The ball screw is of quality manufacture. You can see it utilizes a ground precision ball screw shaft.
